Updating the MPC X/Live's Firmware to 2.7

Your MPC must be running firmware version 2.7 to access Live Control mode. If you haven't already, download the updater application from the links below. Note: The firmware updater is also available for download from the MPC X/Live's product page.

Installing the Network MIDI Driver

The Akai Network Driver will allow your MPC X or MPC Live to seamlessly communicate with and control Ableton Live.

1. Download the Network MIDI Driver for your OS from the MPC X/Live product page.

2. After the download completes, click the file to open the setup application. Follow the prompts to complete the installation.

3. Reboot your computer after the installation completes.

Connecting your Hardware via Wi-Fi Network

Now that the Network Driver is installed, let's connect the MPC to a Network. This can be done over Wi-Fi or Ethernet. If you prefer to use an Ethernet cable, skip ahead to the next section.

1. Press the Menu button and tap the gear icon to open the Preferences menu.

2. Tap Wi-Fi to open the Wi-Fi settings. Make sure Wi-Fi is set to On, and then connect to your local wireless network.

3. Ensure that your computer is on the same Wi-Fi network as your MPC.

4. Open the Akai Network Driver from your application or program folder.

5. In the Configured Remote Device field, locate the IP address and Serial Number of your MPC and select it. Note:If you do not see your unit's Serial Number and IP, click the Add a Device button to manually enter your unit's IP address.

6. When you are finished, you can close the Akai Network Driver application and open Ableton Live.

Connecting your Hardware via Ethernet

If Wi-Fi is not available in your studio or workspace, it is also possible to connect with a physical Ethernet connection. Connecting your MPC over Ethernet will require a USB to Ethernet adapter for your MPC X or Live, as well as an Ethernet cable. Additional adapters may be necessary for your computer if it does not have an available ethernet port.

A USB to Ethernet adapter will be necessary to connect the MPC. The USB side will connect to your MPC's USB A port. The adapter's Ethernet terminal can be connected to an Ethernet cable.

1. Connect your USB to Ethernet adapter to the USB A port of the MPC. Route the Ethernet cable and necessary adapter to an available port on your computer.

2. Press the Menu button and tap the gear icon to open the Preferences menu.

3. Select Ethernet from the Preferences menu and make sure the Enabled option is checked.

4. From your computer, open the Akai Network Driver application.

5. In the Configured Remote Device field, locate the IP address and Serial Number of your MPC and select it.

6. If you still do not see your unit's Serial Number and IP, click the Add a Device button to manually enter your unit's IP address.

7. When you are finished, you can close the Akai Network Driver application and open Ableton Live.

Configuring Ableton Live

Important:To use MPC v2.7 to control Ableton Live, you will need to download and install version 10.1.2 or later.

1. Open Ableton Live 10.1.2 or later and enable Link.

2. Open the Preferences menu by selecting Live > Preferences.

3. Make sure you have selected your preferred Audio Device in the Audio tab.

4. In the Link / MIDI tab, click the first available Control Surface field and select Akai Force MPC.

5. In the same row, select Akai Network – DAW Control as the Input and Output.

6. Under the MIDI Ports section, set Remote for the Akai_Force_MPC Input and Akai_Force_MPC Output to On.

7. Once the previous steps have been completed, you can begin controlling Ableton Live with your MPC. To enter Live Control Mode, press the Menu button and tap the Live Control icon. The MPC will automatically connect with your current session in Ableton.
